Why Most Church Outreach Doesn't Work (And What to Do Instead)
We've been invested in outreach for years as part of Church Coach Ministries. This program is the result of working with hundreds of churches across America.
Your church probably has an outreach budget. Maybe it goes toward a fall festival, a bouncy house, a picnic in the park. And if you've hosted one of these events, you know how this usually goes: 50, 75, maybe 100 people show up. Everyone has a great time. And the next Sunday, almost none of them are sitting in your pews.
You're not doing anything wrong. The event worked. It just wasn't designed to do what you actually need it to do.
Depending on the size of your church, a single outreach event can run anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000. A summer VBS can climb past $7,500. That's real money for most congregations, and the return is usually measured in attendance at the event itself, not in new families joining the life of the church.
Here's the uncomfortable truth behind those numbers: most outreach events attract people who are already church-friendly. The family that shows up to your bouncy house barbecue was probably open to visiting a church anyway. The people you most want to reach, the ones who would never RSVP to anything with your church's name on it, stayed home.
So the question isn't "how do we get more people to our next event?" It's "how do we reach the people our events were never going to reach?"
It's like dating: Inviting someone straight to a Sunday service is like meeting someone and immediately inviting them to your house. It skips every step where trust gets built. Most people want a neutral activity first, something low-stakes and enjoyable on its own, where they can get a feel for who you are before they commit to anything.
People treat churches the same way. Before they ever walk through your doors, they're watching from a distance. They're reading your website, scrolling your social media, maybe clicking on a livestream. They're evaluating whether your church feels safe, genuine, and worth their Sunday morning.
The best community outreach ideas for churches create space for that evaluation instead of skipping it.
